SOLSTICE PARTY!
written by Susan Soon He Stanton
directed by Tyler Mercer

November 2-19*, 2017
The Jeffrey & Paula Gural Theatre
at the A.R.T./New York Theatres

A group of friends gather to celebrate the Summer Solstice together in the deep Upstate New York woods behind an old farmhouse. What begins as a casual, fun weekend quickly devolves into something more sinister; a power-struggle and then a game of survival that is by turns bizarre and shocking. Written as a Jonestown parable for the Trump era, playwright Susan Soon He Stanton explores themes of “group-think” and betrayal that instigate our deepest primal fears.

Uproot

Original music and sound design

4ea8e1_dbb8835acaa747539feccfe2afb7a317-mv2.png

The Food Plays present UPROOT by Julia Levine, at HERE (145 6th Avenue) on Tuesday, August 22 and Wednesday, August 23 at 8:30pm.

Merging non-linear narrative with tropes from twenty-first century life, UPROOT combines text- and movement-based moments to meditate on where our food comes from. UPROOT is the inaugural play in The Food Plays series.

HERE Arts Center
145 6th Ave
New York, NY 10013

About UPROOT:
UPROOT grows out of questions around the Western industrial food system: Where does our food come from, and how did we get to be disconnected from its source? Five anthropomorphized foods take on these questions, as they build community, travel through time and space, and realize their potentials. Audiences encounter these foods in everyday places, from the grocery store, to the office, to the movie theatre, through text- and movement-based moments.

UPROOT is written and directed by Julia Levine, in collaboration with the ensemble and director Tyler Thomas. UPROOT features lighting design by Maybe Burke and sound design by Adrian Bridges. UPROOT is performed by Jo'Lisa Jones, Adam Mahieddine, Trevor Nalepka, Julie Orkis, and Atiya Taylor, and is stage managed by Lyndsey Barratt.

This production is a part of SubletSeries@HERE: Co-op, HERE's curated summer rental program, which provides artists with subsidized space and equipment, as well as technical support.

About The Food Plays:
The Food Plays is a performance-based initiative founded by writer, director, and producer Julia Levine to cultivate community around topics of food and food justice. The Food Plays are comprised of a series of performance works raising specific questions about the Western industrial food system, including: how did we get to be disconnected from where our food comes from; who makes choices about our agricultural system; why is there food surplus around the world, yet there is so much hunger?

Chickens In The Yard

Original Music & Sound Design featured in Adjusted Realists' production of Chickens In The Yard

ADJUSTED REALISTS presents
CHICKENS IN THE YARD
By Paul Kruse
Directed by Will Taylor
Starring Maggie Low*, Jeremiah Maestas*, Roger Manix, Sangi Varsano

June 28 - July 16, 2017
JACK
Brooklyn, NY

In a rustic home in Pittsburgh, John and Tom feel their futures tugged in opposing directions by career prospects and family tensions. But Chickens in the Yard, Paul Kruse’s lyrical play that premiered at Quantum Theatre in 2015, is no conventional domestic drama. Echoing every emotional beat in this expansive collage of memories are the lives of the home’s chickens, intense, inscrutable, and sneakily as human as their human counterparts. As the spotlight shifts between man and fowl, Chickens in the Yard scratches at the thin skin of contemporary relationships, with parallel creatures yearning for love and normalcy in a deeply abnormal world

ADJUSTED REALISTS tell theatrical stories about slightly unhinged worlds. Their first production was the acclaimed revival of Nicky Silver's PTERODACTYLS. Other productions includes the world premiere of Stephen Kaliski's GLUTEN! at 59E59 Theaters (NYIT Award winner) and MEMORIAM at FringeNYC. The collective was founded in 2014 and includes Stephen Kaliski, Roger Manix, Maggie Low, Jeremiah Maestas, and Rachel McPhee.

Born in the rural town of Parral, Chile, Mochi Parra began training as a concert cellist and performer at the age of five. Deeply rooted in Chilean folk songs, her repertoire stretches to embrace musical influences from all over South and Central America as well as the Caribbean. Her captivating voice has been heard in combination with a number of remarkable musicians such as Carlos Hayre, Juan Falu, and Carlos Mejia Godoy.

Berkeley Jazz School teacher David Pinto is internationally known for his work as music director, arranger, and bass player for Grammy-winner Susana Baca. He was a member of Peru Jazz, a group highly praised for their innovation in encompassing Pervian roots. David also leads the group Syncopated Colors.

Mochi and David are teaming up to present a concert of South American musical jewels that will set a precedent for the boundless possibilities between the voice and a six-stringed bass. The two gave taste of their beautiful musical dialogue at the Encuentro Festival last December when presenting an arrangement of the late Rafael Manriquez’s “The Hand,” and were said to have “created an exquisite orchestration.” It goes without saying that we are in for a treat!

What’s on your mind before you fall asleep at night?
“What was I thinking when I said that?”
“Does he feel the same way about me?”
“How long have I been laying here?”

"The Insomniac’s Almanac" brings us inside the bedroom and the mind of Teddy, an insomniac, as he battles with his sleeplessness and questions his own sanity. Luckily, Teddy has his trusty almanac to aid him in his quest for sleep. Plumbing the depths of a sleepless mind, we search for the root cause of a disease that affects nearly 60 million Americans every year. You’ll never look at sleep the same way again after you crack open The Insomniac’s Almanac.

"Journey to the Center of a Black Hole" follows the spiral in and down, both in space and in the human mind, of warps in spacetime so intense that nothing can escape, not even light. Through interactive astrophysics demonstrations, Powerpoints, and personal anecdotes, we explore the darkness that hides all around us, finding tools to understand the black holes we know in our own lives and map the astronomical landscapes of our communities. Come learn to be an astronomer of the human spirit as we take our journey to the very center of a black hole.
