The Food Plays present UPROOT by Julia Levine, at HERE (145 6th Avenue) on Tuesday, August 22 and Wednesday, August 23 at 8:30pm.

Merging non-linear narrative with tropes from twenty-first century life, UPROOT combines text- and movement-based moments to meditate on where our food comes from. UPROOT is the inaugural play in The Food Plays series.

HERE Arts Center

About UPROOT:
UPROOT grows out of questions around the Western industrial food system: Where does our food come from, and how did we get to be disconnected from its source? Five anthropomorphized foods take on these questions, as they build community, travel through time and space, and realize their potentials. Audiences encounter these foods in everyday places, from the grocery store, to the office, to the movie theatre, through text- and movement-based moments.

UPROOT is written and directed by Julia Levine, in collaboration with the ensemble and director Tyler Thomas. UPROOT features lighting design by Maybe Burke and sound design by Adrian Bridges. UPROOT is performed by Jo'Lisa Jones, Adam Mahieddine, Trevor Nalepka, Julie Orkis, and Atiya Taylor, and is stage managed by Lyndsey Barratt.

This production is a part of SubletSeries@HERE: Co-op, HERE's curated summer rental program, which provides artists with subsidized space and equipment, as well as technical support.

About The Food Plays:
The Food Plays is a performance-based initiative founded by writer, director, and producer Julia Levine to cultivate community around topics of food and food justice. The Food Plays are comprised of a series of performance works raising specific questions about the Western industrial food system, including: how did we get to be disconnected from where our food comes from; who makes choices about our agricultural system; why is there food surplus around the world, yet there is so much hunger?
