Undiscarded

This November, Kaleid Theatre will be presenting a new work, aimed at giving voice to the people and things our society discards, what we often think of as trash. As usual, Adrian will be creating the original sound design for this latest Kaleid production.

Undiscarded explores the things and people that we, as a society, discard, the relationships between them, and what it means for us to listen to their stories. In a world where discarding is intertwined with identity, we faced the things and people that we discard, and confronted the desires that urge us to throw them away. What do we risk by by listening to those we discard? What do we gain?

What happens when the dream you thought you were living falls apart, and you don’t recognise the person staring back at you in the mirror? How do you exist when it is too dark to see? 'D' is a physical exploration of one woman’s emotional journey through divorce.

Divorce is a loss, loss of a relationship, loss of dreams and hope for the future, loss of love. With loss comes the grieving process. According to Swiss psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, there are 5 stages to the grieving process: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. In 'D', this model was used to create 5 dances, exploring each stage of grief.

In history and in myth, we sacrifice humans to win battles, abate crop failure, or maintain peace. Iphigenia was sacrificed for wind to take her father’s army to Troy and Jephthah offered his own daughter in exchange for victory in battle. We trade human lives to shape the world and ask for cosmic favors.

Take/Sacrifice explores this space of desire, a landscape littered with those we have sacrificed to secure the things we want. Surrounded by iconic figures and archeological mysteries, our wishes become reflections of ourselves – what we want from the world, how we want the world to behave, and the lengths we are willing to go to make it so. What do we cling to? What do we want so much that we’ll destroy each other for it?

Take/Sacrifice will be presented as part of Mz. Fest, a festival of new works-in-progress created by women to tell their stories through art.
